According to government guidelines, from the 6th April 2022, calorie labelling on menus will become mandatory for businesses that fall within set criteria.
This applies to:
- Businesses and franchises that employ more than 250 employees on the first day of the financial year. If the franchise agreement is limited to the alcohol provided and the franchisee is free to choose what other food is provided, they are exempt.
- Food for immediate consumption – such food is offered for sale at a café, restaurant or other premises selling food for consumption on the premises.
- Food that is not pre-packaged food (subject to separate requirements), and is offered for sale by a business for consumption off the premises, and does not require any preparation by the consumer before it is consumed (i.e. takeaway).
